Sector Sustainable Development Group Meetings
Date: 3 July 2002 - Meeting #1
Venue: HM Prison Winchester
Introductions
The meeting commenced with a round the room
self introduction, each present outlining their main job function
and experiences of environmental issues to date.
Purpose of the Group
PC gave an explanation of the BEF Forum and its
intended function. Several Focus Groups had met outside of the main
forum e.g. renewable energy I transport and commercial waste and PC
felt that the\Public Sector organisations within Hampshire should
trial a Public Sector Focus Group, such was the representation at
the main BEF Forums. SIENA in Southampton were aware of the MOD, NHS
and Fire Service interest which would be used as a basis for the
focus group.
Environmental Concerns
A general discussion then followed over the
issues that were affecting individual organisations. These were then
brought together to form the following key points:-
1. Transport Plans -travel to work
2. Reducing Energy and Water Consumption
a) Benchmark Sites/Surveys
b) Energy Wardens
c) Leak detection
d) Bili/Tariff analysis
3. Smoke emissions -training
4. Bio Diversity -grounds maintenance
-composting
5. Waste Management -
a) Category D Clinical waste
b) local initiatives
c) recycling costs
d) fluorescent tubes
e) tracking of waste
6. Water course contamination -foam, diesel,
licensing
7. Food waste -grease/fat build up
8. Staff awareness
a) Energy campaigns
b) Presentations/booklets
c) competitions
d) involve communities
9. Asbestos
10. Water Regulations
11. Renewable Energy
Group Strategy and actions
The group decided that the areas identified as
common to the majority of organisations would form the basis of
detailed discussions at further meetings. At each meeting two items
would be discussed in depth and it was agreed that the group would
meet once a quarter with a rotating venue. The focus group would
then be reviewed to decide on the future of such events and their
effectiveness.
The group decided on PC to act as chair and
spokesperson.
The next meeting was arranged for:-
