Recycle for Hampshire celebrates a successful year of hard work

The first year of this campaign has been a huge success. To mark this Recycle for Hampshire celebrated with the production of a short film 'Recycle for Hampshire - A year in the making' showcasing their hard work.

Looking back on the campaign, Roger Black commented: “A lot has been achieved. People really are changing their behaviour which - after all - is what the campaign is all about. Recycling is becoming second nature for most of us, and - crucially - as it’s so easy to do, no-one has any excuse not to be involved.”

So what has been achieved?

7 Days to recycle your newspaper

Before Recycle for Hampshire could start pushing for change they needed to be sure of what was already going on. The message from residents was that clear, simple advice about what to recycle was needed. Because of this a ‘toolkit’ of artwork and products was developed to help partners deliver their message. The single most successful item in the toolkit was the general recycling leaflet created for all households in Hampshire.

“The artwork was just what we needed at a time when we had to get a new and consistent message across to our residents. We’ve used it a lot – on our recycling vehicles, on leaflets, flyers, and our web pages.” Sally Smith, Recycling Officer, Havant Borough Council

Results from doorstep surveys showed that Recycle for Hampshire has been a thorough success in increasing recycling and reducing contamination. Residents have increased their participation in recycling by 13% and decreased their contamination by up to 14%.

However, despite this success there is still much to do. Over the next two years the team aim to target specifically low and non-recycling groups and develop education resources for secondary school children and support more partner authorities to get their own house in order.
