UK - Hampshire local authorities working on joint MSW strategyHampshire local authorities, working together as Project Integra have just published a draft Joint Municipal Waste Management Strategy, and are inviting comments from residents, stakeholders, experts and anyone else with an interest. The Strategic review is the biggest since Project Integra was conceived in the early 1990s. At the heart of the proposals - which will set the direction for muncipal waste management in Hampshire in the next 14 years - are policies to support more sustainable waste management options for small and medium sized businesses, to move away from landfilling any untreated household waste and to tackle waste growth. The "preferred option" also points away from separate collection of kitchen waste and managing demand for kerbside collection of garden waste through charging for the service. The draft strategy stops short of specifying future technology options at this stage, but commits the partners to assess all options to avoid landfilling untreated household waste. A vital innovation in Hampshire's strategy has been its development in tandem with a review of strategic land use planning under the new Minerals and Waste Development Framework. Both are heavily influenced by "More from Less" a document produced by stakeholders as part of Hampshire's Material Resources Strategy - http://www.mrs-hampshire.org.uk. The emphasis on the whole waste stream and small business waste in particular is also a reflection of the resource management approach outlined in More from Less. Copies of the Draft Joint Municipal Waste Management Strategy and an on-line response form, can be downloaded from the Project Integra Website: http://www.integra.org.uk/board/main.html#jmwms or by contacting Project Integra's Steve Read - steve.read@hants.gov.uk. |
