Where can you find Renewable Energy in Hampshire and Isle of Wight?
Energy produced continuously from the sun’s rays, biomass, wind and water, otherwise known as renewable energy, does not contribute as much to greenhouse gases when compared to fossil fuels. Today, it is accepted that increased greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is causing climate change. To help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and lessen the effects of climate change in the future. The Government is aiming for a 10 % renewable energy generating capacity across the UK by 2010. Hampshire and Isle of Wight’s (HIOW) sub-regional targets for land-based renewable energy is 115 MW by 2010 and 122 MW by 2016. Most of HIOW’s land based renewable energy is expected to come from biomass and on-shore wind. So how are we doing in terms of achieving these targets?
To find out, log on to www.SEE-Stats.org . SEE-Stats is a web-based information system that has been set up to help monitor and inform on the progress we are making towards achieving these targets. It gives information about what types of renewable energy systems are in place in the region, when they were built, how much energy they generate, what socio-economic and environmental plus-points they bring to their owners and localities. One of the barriers to using renewable energy is that there are only a few examples around and there is a lack of confidence in how renewables can give us the secure supplies of energy that we need in our daily lives. So why don’t you find out more about a renewable energy installation in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight? Hampshire County Council together with its partners at the Environment Centre (tEC) and TV Energy are collecting data on renewable energy installations in the region. The website is administered by TV Energy on behalf of South East Sustainable Energy Partnership which is led by the Government Office for the South East. If you would like to know about what is happening in your area or would like to add an installation to the website please contact enquiries@environmentcentre.com. |
