Hampshire Waste and Recycling Centres

Alton Household Waste Recycling Site

'Household Waste Recycling Centres' (or HWRCs) are facilities for Hampshire residents to dispose of bulky household waste. The sites are provide by Hampshire County Council and run by independent contractors. There are currently 24 sites in Hampshire with Southampton and Portsmouth providing in their own sites.

These sites provide important recycling functions. The HWRCs in Hampshire have an average recycling rate of 53%, which is well above the UK average.

Different containers/areas are provided to segregate the waste and make it easier to recycle. Some of the things the sites will take include: waste electronic and electrical equipment, green garden waste, metals, newspapers and magazines, cardboard, glass bottles and jars, soil and rubble, hazardous household waste, wood, textiles, car batteries and engine oil

The sites are open from 8am-7pm between 1 April and 30 September, and 8am-4pm between 1 October and 31 March. A small number of sites operate different opening hours (please see list of sites), so you should contact these sites in advance to check.
