Hampshire's Eco-homes
Planning permission has been granted for an innovative energy efficient housing project in Andover. The new eco-home scheme at Artists
Way will be developed by the Aster
Group, the Council and the Housing
Corporation, who are providing
grant funding towards the scheme's
costs. Work is expected to start on
site in the next few months and will
be completed in about a year's time.
The scheme has been designed by the architects of the pioneering BedZED scheme
(Beddington Zero Energy Development) built by the Peabody Trust in Surrey.
The Council made the site at Artists Way available for the project. It is within reach of the
town centre and the railway station, so residents won't even need to own a car.
The design uses the latest technology to reduce the need to use fossil fuels and will be
positioned to make the most of the sun's heat, with south facing sun spaces. The
development will consist of 5 houses and 12 flats, available for rent and shared ownership,
providing high standards of housing that will help to improve the quality of life for local
people.
The latest government Energy White Paper says that by 2050 national emissions of
harmful CO2 gasses should be reduced by 60% from mid-1990 levels. The Artists Way
site will set new standards for affordable homes by minimising energy requirements and
CO2 emissions through the use of insulated building materials, with ventilation that will
recover heat to help to reduce heating costs.
Feltham Construction based in Newbury will build the scheme, which has been designed by Bill
Dunster Architects, and the project will be managed by Andover-based consultants Fry Binks Ltd.
