The Winners
Hampshire and Isle of Wight businesses have been recognised for their
achievements in relation to sustainable business practices at the SEEDA
Sustainable Business Awards for the South East held at Thorpe Park on
Wednesday 24th November.
The SEEDA Sustainable Business Awards for the South East encourage, inspire
and champion a sustainable approach to business in he South East of England. The Awards celebrate excellence, qualifying significant
sustainable achievements and disseminating best practice widely
SP Systems Limited from Newport on the Isle of Wight won the Overall
Winner Award in the Large Business Category.
SP Systems specialises in high performance materials for the wind
energy, marine and automotive markets. The company, with 500 employees on the
Isle of Wight, supplies 50% of the composites used by the European wind energy
sector. SP Systems won the award
for their environmental and social achievements and for their philosophy of
integrating sustainable business practices into all decisions impacting upon
the company. Environmental
achievements include the reuse of coated paper, which saved £250,000 in raw
material costs, while 414 tonnes of used paper was recycled saving £18,500.
SP also increased the proportions of liquid raw materials arriving by tanker,
which has reduced the quantity of 200 litre drums requiring disposal as
special waste. On the energy side SP conducted an energy study and the
associated improvement reduced energy consumption by 20% between 1999 and
2003.
Hillier Nurseries from Romsey received a Highly Commended Award as
runner up in the Large Business Category. Hillier Nurseries core business is
growing and selling trees and plants, however the company is a passionate
believer in minimising the environmental impacts of its operation and products
and is active in educating sustainable approaches throughout the business.
All plastic pots used in the production process are recycled, creating
a saving of 23 tonnes of plastic waste in 2003.
Through water efficiency measures implemented at Hillier's 40 percent
of the water requirements now come from their own reservoir. Prominently
within Hillier's work ethic is the extensive work experience placements for
local school children as well as a commitment to formulating work programmes
for people with learning disabilities.
Other Hampshire Businesses that were recognised at the awards were Greenhouse
Graphics from Basingstoke who specialise in the printing of market
materials and stationary, Sandy Balls Holiday Centre in the New Forest
who's commitment to sustainability won them the Overall Winner Award at this
years Hampshire and Isle of Wight Sustainable Business Awards, Seek-It
Limited from Portsmouth who have been developing cost effective
collection, assessment and de-manufacturing processes for Waste Electronic
Equipment, and the BP Oil Terminal at Hamble that has implemented
various environmental initiatives across the site.
