HCC Climate Change Seminar

The Climate Change Seminar for policy and decision makers was held on Thursday 4th November 2004, at the County Council’s offices in Winchester.

The seminar brought together members of the County Council, as well as members of Hampshire District and Parish authorities, and Hampshire emergency services.

The delegates heard from speakers such as Geoff Jenkins of the Met Office’s Hadley Centre, Alan Gairns from the Association of British Insurers, Steve Waller from the Improvement and Development Agency for local government and Mark Broadmeadow of Forest Research.

As part of the day the County Council also produced a “Climate Change Newspaper for 2038”.  This newspaper, while fictitious in origin, looked at the likely scenarios that have been given for a changing climate and interpreted the effects that these changes might have in the future, specifically for the year 2038.  Delegates were invited to discuss some of the articles  in the newspaper in individual facilitated groups and the results of these groups are being used to guide development of further climate change work at the County Council.

Delegates were also treated to a wine tasting with a difference.  Local wine connoisseur Philip Evans spoke to delegates on the effects of climate change on the local wine producing industry in Hampshire and offered delegates the opportunity to taste wine that can be currently found in Hampshire and an alternative that it might be possible to produce as a result of a changing climate on grape production.
