Lean Manufacturing

The South East dti Manufacturing Advisory Service aim to help manufacturers actively improve their manufacturing process and business productivity through by providing value added services where they are needed.

Lean Manufacturing is one of the techniques they actively promote, as the potential savings for business are high. Typical savings are:

  •   83% reduction in lead times

  •   57% improvement in productivity

  •   54% reduction in set-up times

  •   45% more capacity

  •   67% reduction in space requirements

  •   38% reduction in supply chain costs

The Lean Manufacturing technique involves looking at 7 waste areas:

  •   Overproduction   Waiting and Delays

  •   Management of People   Management of Material

  •   Overstocking   Inappropriate Processing

Defects

It addresses each of these in turn, assessing those activities that do not add value and eliminating those that are unnecessary. The technique focuses on the talents within the organisation and finds realistic solutions.
