DEFRA Recycling Fund

The Minister for Environment Elliot Morley, provided a massive boost to recycling in England by announcing 14 successful local authority partnership proposals on waste minimisation and recycling that DEFRA will be supporting over the next two years. The successful partnerships were: Buckinghamshire, Cambridge, Cheshire, Derbyshire, Devon, Essex, Greater Manchester, Hertfordshire, Lancashire, Merseyside, Shropshire & Gloucestershire, Somerset, Suffolk and Hampshire.

The successful proposals cover 7.5 million tonnes of England's annual waste production and will each benefit from up to £5m (£62.5 million in total) over the two years as well as receiving Government support services that are designed to help deliver high quality environmental solutions.

The £62.5m allocation will finance two year programmes of work in the relevant local authorities that will expand the recycling and composting infrastructure including new and enhanced kerbside collection schemes, household waste sites and recycling facilities. The partnership proposals are also designed to deliver long-term waste management solutions to authorities with no existing facilities.

The successful local authorities identified short to medium term measures that need funding to increase recycling rates and deliver good quality environmental solutions as best value to the local taxpayer.

Commenting on the announcement, Minister Morley said: "The proposals clearly demonstrate that many English local authorities are committed to delivering world class recycling and composting services.

The best proposals demonstrated great value for money and the number of projects approved reflect this. Going forward, there is a lot of hard work in getting these proposals implemented in full. But this announcement is a huge step forward".
