Successful Win for Green Recycling

Onyx is celebrating after scooping the prestigious Composting Association Award under the category of ‘The Partnership Award’ for its involvement in the green waste recycling partnership, Apex.

The Partnership Award recognizes the best partnership between (two or more) composters, local authorities, community composting groups and industry groups which have shown to be among the most successful in terms of material diversion, product sales and local impact. This new award recognises the most successful relationship between different commercial, public and not-for-profit partners.

Onyx has been producing the award winning peat-free soil conditioner, Pro-Grow, from grass cuttings, hedge clippings and other green garden waste from across Hampshire for the last six years.  In 2002, the company formed a partnership, Apex, with two other major waste management companies and specialist growing medium company, Freeland Horticulture, to expand the market for quality green waste compost.

Since its launch, Apex has delivered over 200,000m3 of peat-free organic compost to the retail and landscaping industries. The Apex product range includes compost sold through WyeVale Garden Centres, B&Q and Homebase. It has also featured in high profile projects such as the Millennium Village in Greenwich, Bluewater Shopping Centre and the Eden Project.

Peter Mills, composting manager for Onyx Hampshire, said: “This is a real achievement for Onyx and the Apex team. We are delighted that green recycling has once again been recognised as a best practice initiative.  We would urge all Hampshire residents to continue supporting this green scheme by using the network of 26 Household Waste Recycling Centres where they can deposit their green garden waste for recycling.”

The composting awards were set up in 2001 to celebrate and showcase composting best practice, innovation and technological advances by compost producers in the UK.

The awards are an important contribution to the industry and they push the boundaries of composting technology, innovation, marketing and product development. This year the numbers of awards categories were increased to five, enabling them to be more targeted.
