New Year Eco-Resolutions

Five of the best New Year Eco-Resolutions - For a lightly lived 2005

Get down to Earth - get a compost bin or a wormery for your kitchen and garden waste. Left in a landfill site, your biodegradable waste will release pollutants into the air and poisons into the watercourse. Instead, capture the nutrients from the food, create your own compost and help the environment at the same time.

Invest in a bicycle. Spring is just around the corner so get fit, explore the countryside, avoid the traffic jams and reduce your carbon emissions all at the same time.

Food for thought - buy local and , wherever possible, organic. Reduce food miles, support the local economy, help wildlife and reduce pollution. For tea, coffee, chocolate and anything else that can’t be produced locally, pick Fairtrade options and support workers in poorer countries.

Sign up with a renewable energy supplier. Once you have done that, you might also want to think about how to minimise your energy requirements.

Find out about ethical investment and use your money to support positive change in business and the markets.

Motto for 2005: Reduce, re-use, recycle (in that order!)

Consume less, discover inventive ways to live more sustainably, re-use what you can and recycle what’s left. It should make life simpler, cheaper in the long run and more creative.

This is just a starting point. Visit the Centre for Alternative Technology on www.cat.org.uk, or your local environment centre for many more ideas. Or pick up the free ‘Rough Guide to a Better World’ from your local post office.
