Medal Honour for Hampshire Incinerator

THE multi-million-pound Chineham incinerator has won a top award for the Onyx Environmental Group. Onyx's Integra North Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) has secured the Brunel Medal from the Institution of Civil Engineers, which recognises civil engineering excellence.

John Collis, director of Onyx Hampshire, said: "We are delighted and extremely proud to have been awarded this medal.  "Integra North, together with the second and third facilities currently under construction at Marchwood, near Southampton, and in Portsmouth, forms an intrinsic part of the strategy to manage Hampshire waste."  He added: "The facility has a variety of architectural advances, from light-reflective cladding and a glass roof to the use of curves and colours to soften impact.  "It provides an alternative to landfill, but allows for the sustainable production of energy through the disposal of waste."

Integra North began in Chineham in 2003 and was officially opened by HRH The Princess Royal last September.  It has the capacity to process 90,000 tonnes of waste, which cannot be traditionally recycled, from the north of the county each year.  The waste is converted into electricity and generates enough power for the local grid for some 8,000 homes.

The Brunel Medal was originated by the Society of Civil Engineering Technicians (SCET) in 1981 for individuals or firms that have shown excellence in civil engineering. Onyx will receive the award at an official ceremony in November.
