Hampshire has European Attitude to Resource Use As reported in the August 2003 NRI Newsletter, the Association of Cities and Regions for Recycling (ACRR) produced the exhibition ‘Earth - A User’s Guide’, which was held at Intech in Winchester. The conference was designed to pass on the message of Sustainable living to the Hampshire Community and to encourage greater awareness of our impact on the environment through our daily actions. The Exhibition was aimed at revealing the relationships between lifestyles, the production of waste, and the consumption of natural resources. It invited people to think about the way they live and about the justification for the industrialised countries’ appropriation of resources. The Exhibition also provided the opportunity to remind consumers i.e. every single one of us, of the power that we have: through our everyday purchases, we can contribute to protecting the environment and our resources. The event was made up of displays and interactive exhibits, where visitors were asked to answer various questions on lifestyles, environmental awareness and other issues. Questions such as rating what are the biggest challenges facing Hampshire, what aspects of our lifestyles have the biggest effect on the environment in Hampshire and whether or not the information supplied on the products we buy affects the choices we make. The results of the surveys are displayed on the following link: GRAPHS
The overall conclusion is that the perception of the environment and its associated issues in Hampshire is broadly similar to that across mainland Europe. We will be looking in more detail at the results to see where the biggest opportunities in Hampshire lie. For further information, please contact Vicky Webb on vicky.webb@hants.gov.uk |
